Tasks and Responsibilities in the Protection of Female Journalists

27/02/2025

The safety of female journalists is a priority for the profession, for editors, employers, and the journalists themselves, whether they are employed or freelance collaborators. Violence against women is defined as ‘any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life’ (Article 1 of the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, 1993). Unfortunately, female journalists have faced increasing violence, threats, and attacks in recent years. This brief handbook provides basic information and practical advice to journalists and editors in their work.
