The NGO UZOR, in partnership with NGO ALB Progress, has launched the project “Completing the Mosaic: Empowering the Cultural Identity of Minorities”, whose main goal is to contribute to the preservation and promotion of the cultural and historical heritage of minority peoples and communities in Montenegro.
Montenegro is a multiethnic society where different communities have, for centuries, built social and cultural reality together. Yet, research and practice show that the cultural heritage of minority peoples is often not sufficiently visible in the public sphere, while stereotypes and ethnic distance remain present. This project therefore seeks to increase the recognition of cultural diversity and demonstrate that different identities are in fact integral parts of the unique mosaic of Montenegrin society.
Key project activities include a wide range of cultural, educational, and promotional content. At the very beginning, an analysis of the current situation will be carried out and recommendations developed for improving cultural heritage preservation policies. The project also features a rich cultural and artistic program, alongside the publication of six articles presenting both tangible and intangible heritage in an accessible yet professional manner. At the same time, a short documentary film will be produced, dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Albanian minority community and its contribution to the overall identity of Montenegro.
One of the project’s innovations is the creation of a social game intended primarily for children and youth, but also for adults, designed as a fun way to learn about the languages, traditions, and historical figures of different minority groups. In addition, an exhibition will be organized, showcasing archival photographs, documents, and contemporary depictions of the cultural life of minority communities, while also offering visitors a space for dialogue and mutual understanding.
The project will run for 10 months and is funded by the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights of Montenegro through the competition “Integration with Identity”.
The project “Completing the Mosaic” demonstrates that nurturing the identity of minority communities also means strengthening the overall identity of Montenegro. Through a combination of research, cultural-artistic, and educational programs, the project creates a space where differences are not obstacles, but a value that connects.
