The safety of journalists is a priority for the profession, for journalists (either employed or
freelances), editors and employers. Without safe working conditions, journalists cannot carry
out their duty to investigate and to report to the public. However, journalists are facing
increasing violence, threats and attacks in recent years.
This short handbook provides essential information and practical advice to journalists in their
work, but any guideline and handbook can only be efficient with the necessary training and
safety policy in newsrooms. A culture of newsroom safety among journalists and media
managers is a prerequisite for journalist safety.
